"I Am That Child"

I am that child who stands to the side,
Not wanting to be noticed, just wanting to hide.
I am that child too frightened to speak,
Whose head is bowed down so timid and meek.

I am that child who knows no love,
Just hate-filled words, slaps and shoves.
I am that child who longs for a gentle touch,
A kind word, a soft kiss. Is that asking too much?

I am that child who when it's time to sleep,
Yearns for a mother’s kind touch and a kiss on the cheek.
I am that child who needs good examples to learn,
But the examples shown here are of great concern.

I am that child who has troubled sleep,
Who lies in bed lonely, with sadness so deep.
I am that child whose cries are never heard,
Who in quiet desperation never utters a word.

I am that child who managed to survive,
Who has grown to be a good parent and partner in life.
I am that child who is now molding new minds,
Who's struggled to learn what it means to be kind.

I am that child who loves unconditionally,
Who is determined not to pass on negativity.
I am that child who draws strength from above,
From the bright Light of exceptional love.

I am that child who depends each day,
On Angels to guide and protect at work or at play.
I am that child whose arms are upraised,
In gratitude and love, I sing God's praise.
